KX3 / PX3 stand

Hi folks, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to set up the KX3 / PX3 for home use. My problem had been the angle at which the rigs sit on a desk is not conducive to easy visualization from my sitting vantage. So I figured I’d rig up something  using SideKX mounts and Ram Mount components. The whole stand is mounted on ¼” AL plate and set back from the front to allow a magnetic key to be mounted. I have some self adhesive metal plate coming which will provide a surface where my key can mount. What do you think and any suggestions?

I use the Ram mounts too in the shack, though I lucked out as I have a plywood shelf to attach them to for my work monitor.

This whole setup is temporary as we are renting this house until Jan of 2023, but it does work.

Hi Rich,
I have used Nifty Accessory stands The other is NOGAQRP wooden stands. There are several versions but these stands stack the KX3 and the PX3.

I love my NOGAQRP stand!!

I have the collapsible portable version and use it on SOTA/POTA activations even when I don't take the PX3.

I use the Ram components for my KX3/PX3 and love the available angles. Only issue is that using the suction cup base only works on glass. I had a 16” square of 1/4” plate glass cut for the operating position. Now it sticks!!

I have that stand for field use as well.  It folds up nicely and fits in the top of my Apache 4800 case along with the KX3, PX3, KXPA100, cables and a Navy Flameproof.

It works for field use, it’s too unstable for the shack, I tried to use it and it wobbles and winds up collapsing every week or so from use (I use my station daily).

That’s what I have and posted pics on another thread. A friend ordered two and I don’t know where he got it. Works pretty nice. Made of plastic with 3D printing

Have to disagree, I’ve had no issue using for KX/PX 3 in the shack. Works just fine for me there.

North Georgia QRP Club (https://nogaqrp.org/) sells a few different models of stands including the type depicted.  They are made by Paul Kelley, W4KLY, Stone Mt. Custom Woodworking.  The past year Paul made a pair of custom stands for my KX3 and PX3 - side by side but at a 60 degree viewing angle rather than the normal 45 degrees.  That viewing angle works much better for me.

Question for the people using the Ram Mounts.

Do they lock and hold the equipment in place against button presses?
Would really hate to press a button then have to spend time re-adjusting the radio back to viewing position.  :)

I have one for my KX3 and it is VERY secure. It’s a two handed job to get the radio out of the mount. The joints of the arm can be tightened as that they will not move either. I like mine!

Ditto.

Provided you have decent Ram or Ram knock off components and tighten the arms, they stay put.  There is a little deflection at times, but they spring back.

richlim11

Yes the Ram mounts are very secure I've used them in race cars, fishing boats, kayaks etc. I used a 1" ball sized system but they make larger one like a 1.5"  which would be even more secure but is probably overkill.  The actual Ram brand ball mounts are rubber coated and add to the torsion resistance, I'm confident the mount will not "give way" and result in the rig sustaining damage, that is assuming I tighten the clamps appropriately.  As stated there is some spring to them and this is regardless of using metal or composite arms, I've tried both.  The springiness is not annoying to me, but in the mount, button pushes do not feel like when the rig is on a table. The Side KX mounting plates are of the highest quality and will NOT let go of the rig unintentionally.

The biggest issue is how you mount the whole contraption to your desk or station. I chose a 1/4" AL plate and have some rubber feet on the way from Amazon to place on the bottom. So far it is really secure and does not move on button press. I would think the most secure mount would be using a flange mount and bolting the Ram ball to your desk, but for me that wasn't an option.  Hope this helps.

Here are the pieces I used but I would suggest you look at the Ram Mounts website as her so many different options.  Also check out the Side KX website for more mounting options, this is also where I got the mounting brackets to hold the rig.

You can use a flange mounted ball to screw on your desk which would be much more stable too.
